ZENITH BANK ACHIEVES DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH IN GROSS EARNINGS, PROPOSES N4.00 FINAL DIVIDEND IN FULL YEAR 2024

Zenith Bank Plc has announced its audited financial results for the year ended December 31, 2024, delivering significant growth across key performance indicators. The Bank’s impressive performance reflects effective management and pricing of its risk assets, as well as an optimized treasury portfolio, reinforcing its position as a leader in Nigeria’s banking industry.
According to the audited financial results for the 2024 financial year presented to the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), the Bank recorded a double-digit year-on-year (YoY) growth of 86% in gross earnings, increasing from N2.13 trillion in 2023 to N3.97 trillion in 2024. This growth was driven by a 138% increase in interest income, supported by investment in high-yield government securities, and growth in the Bank’s loan book.
Commenting on the results, Dame Dr Adaora Umeoji OON, Group Managing Director/CEO, stated “This year’s performance underscores our unwavering commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions. We will also remain focused on deepening financial inclusion, enhancing service delivery, and creating value for our customers and stakeholders.
Zenith Bank’s profit before tax (PBT) rose by 67%, reaching N1.3 trillion in 2024 from N796 billion in 2023, driven by a combination of top-line expansion and efficient treasury portfolio management. Net interest income increased by 135% from N736 billion in 2023 to N1.7 trillion, reinforcing the Bank’s strong core banking performance and ability to grow earnings despite macroeconomic headwinds. Non-interest income also grew by 20% from N919 billion to N1.1 trillion.
The Bank’s total assets grew by 47% from N20 trillion in 2023 to N30 trillion in 2024, underpinned by a strong liquidity position and effective balance sheet management. Customer deposits surged by 45% from N15 trillion to N22 trillion in 2024, reflecting a historically strong corporate deposits portfolio and a sustained increase in retail deposits. The increase in retail deposits was driven by customer acquisition and the Bank’s strategic focus on low-cost funding.
Return on Average Equity (ROAE) declined to 32.5% on the back of the injection of new capital, while Return on Average Assets (ROAA) remained unchanged at 4.1%. The Bank’s cost-to-income increased slightly from 36.1% to 38.9%, despite inflationary pressures. Its Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio stood at 4.7%, with a coverage ratio of 223%, underscoring the Bank’s prudent risk management and commitment to maintaining a resilient loan book, ensuring stability and confidence in the Bank’s operations.
Given the good earnings performance, the Bank has proposed a final dividend of N4.00 per share, which brings the total dividend for the year to N5.00 per ordinary share.
In a significant milestone, Zenith Bank successfully raised N350 billion in capital through a rights issue and public offer, with a subscription rate of 160%, demonstrating strong investor confidence in the Bank’s growth trajectory. The proceeds from this capital raise will be strategically deployed to enhance technology infrastructure, strengthen liquidity, and support the Bank’s expansion into key African markets, unlocking new growth opportunities.

ZENITH BANK ASSURES SHAREHOLDERS OF QUANTUM LEAP IN FUTURE DIVIDENDS AT 34TH AGM, PAYS N195.67 BILLION FOR 2024 FINANCIAL YEAR

Shareholders of Zenith Bank Plc, at the 34th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, approved the proposed final dividend payment of NGN4.00 per share, bringing the total dividend for the 2024 financial year to NGN5.00 per share, with a total value of NGN195.67 billion.
The Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Jim Ovia, CFR, thanked the shareholders for their unflinching support and commitment, which have been responsible for the bank’s stellar performance over the years. He noted that despite challenges globally in 2024, Zenith Bank was able to leverage the opportunities within the environment of each subsidiary to record a performance that solidly attests to the bank’s resilience as a brand.
The Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, expressed her appreciation to the shareholders for their commitment and support, promising quantum leap in dividends going forward. According to her, “This is the first time that I am addressing the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in my capacity as the first female GMD/CEO of Zenith Bank. I would like to thank you for your confidence and support that has placed me in this position today”. She further said that “Zenith Bank is committed to, not only meeting your expectations, but exceeding them. We are focused on running a very efficient and sustainable institution that is resilient and will ensure that our institution outlives many generations to come”. Talking specifically about dividend, she emphasized that “If you look at our dividends trajectory, payments over the period have always increased and we will continue to maintain this record. We have successfully completed our recapitalization exercise, achieving 160% subscription. Therefore, we are not under any pressure to go back for the second time to raise funds. Zenith Bank has sufficient capital buffer to do business and we will continue to delight our shareholders. We are committed to growing our topline organically while adhering to our strict corporate governance culture.”
Dr. Faruk Umar, President of the Association of the Rights of Nigerian Shareholders (AARNS), applauded the Group Managing Director for her efforts in ensuring the growth of the bank’s financial indices. He said, “We are very happy that the bank is paying us N5. Most importantly the GMD/CEO, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, has done so well. In the past year, she won the award for the Banker of the Year which is very commendable, and all the bank’s indices have gone up; we are now experiencing trillions in profit against N676 billion the previous year, and the shareholder’s funds, the gross earnings – everything now is in trillions. I think this is very commendable. The bank has won so many awards – no bank in Nigeria has won such qualitative awards like they have. They also surpassed the capitalization threshold of CBN by 160% – this is unprecedented. We are very happy with their performance.”
Speaking on the dividend payout, Alhaji Otunba Mukhtar Mukhtar, Chairman, Trusted Shareholders Association of Nigeria, said “The consistency of Zenith Bank dividend payout has never been matched in Nigeria. Since the inception of this bank, they have kept giving shareholders a consistent dividend payout, and this has made shareholders to be richer, happier, and more excited at the hardwork, performance and commitment of the bank. We are very happy. If you look at the Profit Before Tax (PBT) and the Profit After Tax (PAT), they have been able to cross the N1 trillion threshold. They have given us a Profit Before Tax of N1.3 trillion, which is very commendable. The shareholders, as you have seen at the meeting, have expressed their happiness and joy about this performance. I am grateful to the Chairman, Dr. Jim Ovia, CFR, the Management and the Board for such an outstanding performance.”

Allegations of Fraud Unfounded and False

We have been made aware of a recent publication by Thisday Newspaper, Arise Television and a video circulating, regarding a court case filed by a customer, Dr. Agbai Eke, against FirstBank.
We can affirm that the allegations of fraud in the Bank as alluded to by ‘Dr. Agbai Eke’ are entirely unfounded and false. Our findings on the matter indicate unprofessional and unethical dealings between Dr. Agbai Eke and a former FirstBank employee, using a personal relationship to facilitate unauthorized transactions outside the bank’s knowledge or involvement.
As the matter is currently before the Court, we will refrain from further comments to allow the Court to dispassionately determine the issues before it. The Bank has equally filed a report to law enforcements for further proper investigations and the suspects have made useful statements while the investigations are ongoing.

Against all Odds, FirstBank Eyes Another Decade of Growth

In the first nine months of last year, the earnings per share (EPS) of FBNHoldings Plc, the parent company of First Bank of Nigeria Limited as well as its profit grew by 125 per cent year-on-year (Y/Y).
But there is much more to where the premier bank stands in core banking and its profitability is not a mere accretion of transaction charges but that it has also increased its commitment to financial intermediation. In the three quarters, its interest income, which gives a clue of sustainable profit run, grew by as much as 165 per cent to N1.63 trillion.
And these are not just a random progression, neither are they products of white noise in its corporate journey. It has shown consistency of growth in both top and bottom-line metrics in the last few years, giving an expression to the tagging of its post-2015 crisis era as the ‘decade of miracle’ in the investment market.
For instance, from 2019 to 2023, its most recent audited financial, its EPS has expanded by over fourfold – from 195 kobo to 859 kobo, one of the fastest growing in Nigeria’s capital market. In the same period, it grew its yearly operating profit by over 320 per cent, from a mere N73.8 billion to N310.5 billion.
On the top line, its earnings nearly tripled, growing from N623 billion to N1.6 trillion in five years, during which its total assets jumped by N10.7 trillion to close last year at N16.94 trillion. In the half-decade, according to data obtained from its books, its total shareholder’s equity even grew faster – expanding from N661 billion to N1.75 trillion or 163 per cent.
As a key growth driver, its loans to customers saw a whopping rise of 243 per cent in the period to hit N6.36 trillion as of December 2023. Its facilities, according to information gleaned from its financials are spread across key sectors, including oil and gas, manufacturing, agriculture, agro services, construction, and real estate among others.
Whereas the five-year cycle has demonstrated robust growth, last year’s operations demonstrated even more resilience with the awaited full-year result promising to trump the previous ones. On key profitability indices, last year’s nine months exceeded the 2023 comparative period or full year by wide margins.
For instance, its earnings in the first nine months of 2024 were N2.25 trillion or N655 billion higher than the entire 2023 figure and 134 per cent higher than its comparative period, pointing to an annualised gross of N2.8 trillion. While the interest income showed remarkable growth, its non-interest income was also 82 per cent up from the 2023 three quarters’ N320.5 billion.
The lender’s recent migration to transaction-led banking is paying off with the reinvention of its digital payment system. At the close of last September, First Mobile subscribers had hit 6.9 million while over 23 million had subscribed to a potpourri of online platforms.
With its new 10-year vision, which was articulated in 2023, billed to consolidate these gains, the ‘decade of miracle’ might as well serve as the launch pad of the new FirstBank. But the recent boardroom intrigue and the dispute with General Hydrocarbons Limited (GHL) are a costly distraction the bank cannot afford. Hence, many stakeholders are seeking faster and less confrontational solutions to the crisis.
Amidst the conflicts, the Chief Executive of FirstBank Group, Olusegun Alebiosu, described a 10-year vision of the bank as a major stand in its Vision 2033, which would push the Nigerian premier financial institution to top three universal banks in Africa across retail, wholesale and wealth management customer segments.
“Given that the 10-year vision aspiration is still very market-relevant, and I was also an integral part of the process that birthed it, I intend to focus on ensuring its disciplined execution during my tenure as the Chief Executive Officer.
“As the CEO, I have a clear vision for FirstBank Group, and I am confident that with the strong support of the rest of the management team and board, we will deliver a franchise that will continue to be the pride of Nigeria and Africa within the financial services landscape,” the chief executive, who has told the market that his risk management background means nothing short of sustainable growth, said.
At the 12th AGM of FBNHoldings held on 14th November 2024, shareholders approved another N350 billion capital raise action, which the bank said would be executed in a blend of approaches this year. Plus, with the previous N150 billion rights issues, FirstBank is expected to exceed the new N500 billion minimum capital requirements well ahead of the 2026 deadline to keep its international licence.
A major speed slowing the pace of the traditional banks today is the natural advantage that digital-first banks like Opay, MoniePoint and others have been cloud-natives. Sadly, the brick-and-mortar toga poses a legacy constraint for traditional banks. But FirstBank, the first fruit of the conventional banks, has gone ahead with a digital evolution campaign.
Today, the CEO said, over 90 per cent of FirstBank’s customer-induced transactions happen on the digital channels – FirstMobile, FirstOnline, Lit App, *894#, FirstDirect and ATMs, where it has a comparative advantage.
“As the bank implements its cloud strategy, we are focused on building a nimbler, always-on and resilient financial services group that leverages its rich legacy to serve its customers’ current and emerging needs,” Alebiosu believes.
Interestingly, 2025 is the take-off of the bank’s 2025 to 2029 strategic planning cycle. The bank intends to “double down” on its dominant position across all the markets where we operate. Part of the programme is strategic investments to improve customer experience to make it easier for existing and prospective customers to interact and do business on its offline and digital platform, deploying new technologies and ramping up artificial intelligence deployment to scale up digital operations.
But as it turns out, FirstBank and its sister organisations also have a responsibility to urgently put behind the current distractions to continue consolidating the gains of the ‘decade of miracle’.
